ESSENTIAL GUIDES

Train Adventures

Sit back, relax and let the wonders of Australia pass by your window as you travel in comfort and style on an Australian train journey. Australia’s vast landscape, outback vistas and stunning scenery can be seen as you travel great distances on a ‘land-cruise’ between capital cities in high style for low costs.

Train travel offers the best of both worlds to travellers – the comfort, style and service of a hotel stay with an ever changing spectacle of scenery outside the window which is better than any view a hotel can offer. Travelling on one of Australia’s great trains ensures that getting there is as much fun as the final destination.

The three long-distance Australian train services are The Ghan – legendary for it’s sweeping journey through the heart of Australia’s deserts to the tropical top end, The Overlander – a comfortable and stylish journey between Adelaide and Melbourne in the country’s south, and The Indian Pacific – one of the world’s longest train journeys spanning the breadth of Australia from the Indian Ocean to the shores of the Pacific.

The Ghan

Adelaide - Alice Springs - Katherine - Darwin.

Board the legendary Ghan at Adelaide or Alice Springs, and enjoy a journey unlike any other as you cross the vast Australian landscape in style. The Ghan operates weekly return services departing Sydney and Melbourne, via Adelaide, for Alice Springs and Darwin. Encounter the spectacular scenery of the interior on this fascinating journey to the heart of the continent, then onwards to the tropical ‘top end’. During the 47 hour, 2979km transcontinental journey you will experience the best of Australia in both service and scenery. Off train touring options at Alice Springs and the spectacular Katherine Gorge are available at modest extra cost.

Indian Pacific

Perth - Adelaide - Sydney.

Travelling on the Indian Pacific offers 3 days of Australia from coast to coast, covering 4352km through mountains, across deserts and along the vast and stunning Nullarbor Plain. Spend 3 nights aboard this legendary train experiencing the best of Australia in both comfort and views. The Indian Pacific leaves from the Perth Railway Terminal in East Perth on Mondays and Fridays at 1.35pm.

The Overland

Melbourne - Adelaide.

The Overland train service runs between Melbourne and Adelaide, offering a stylish alternative to a short plane journey. Travel by day and watch the cities melt into rural landscapes and glimpses of outback Australia, or spend an overnight journey thrilling to the experience of seeing a billion stars light up the countryside as you travel in style.
