Though grape growing in Australia got off to a shaky start, the current climate of the wine industry continues to heat up. The first vines planted in Australia came over with the First Fleet and were planted immediately on arrival. Unfortunately, the humidity of Sydney Harbour stopped the vines bearing any grapes at all. Not ones for giving up, the settlers moved the vines to a more suitable location and Australia’s first vineyards were born.
Each and every state now has its own unique wines and flavours, though some are considerably more suited to the industry than others. The Northern Territory has just one vineyard growing up out of the sandy soil, while Victoria boasts more than four hundred.
It is near impossible to define the characteristics of a typical Australian wine. With vineyards covering the vast expanses of the country no two exist in the exact same climate, making for distinctive flavours unique to each region. The cool climate of Tasmania produces wonderful sparkling wines, while wineries in hotter locations are known for their stronger fortified reds.
Travel through the grape growing regions of Australia and you’ll find more than just tantalising wines. These areas are also famous for cosy bed and breakfast accommodation, delicious local produce like cheese or chocolate, and friendly locals who are more than willing to let you have a taste!
